This year, when a page is finished with the Preflight Check, it automatically generates a low resolution PDF. This prevents the “You must view page __ as a PDF” error that you might have encountered into this last year. You will no longer get this error, but keep in mind that this is a low resolution PDF. If you'd like to review a high resolution PDF of the page, this can be selected from the File menu.
Express Submit
Don’t forget that you can submit many pages with a single click! Just filter for the “Finished” status, an “Express Submit” button will appear at the top of the ladder. Clicking this button will package all of the finished pages and show the submission screen, all in one click.
Direct Upload of Your PSPA (Portraits) CD
No need to send your portrait disk to the plant for uploading. You can now upload your portraits directly into eDesign.
Navigate to the Portrait section of your eDesign Library and click the Import Portrait CD button. Then attach a ZIP file containing the contents of your PSPA disk and click Upload. For full instructions on this process see the video in eDesign Help entitled Uploading Your Portrait Disk.
Image Uploads in the Background
No need to let image uploading slow you down. Now you can keep working in eDesign while your images upload in the background. Begin an image upload as you have done in
the past. When the upload begins, click the minimize button. The upload window will be hidden, and you can continue working. An Image Upload notification will appear beside the HJ logo at the top, and you can click that notification at any time to be taken back to the upload in progress.
Portrait Flow Enhancements
Portrait Flow wizard was already great in eDesign, but now it is even more powerful. For a full explanation of these great new enhancements, go to eDesign Help and watch the tutorial videos entitled Portrait Flow Wizard and Portrait Flow: Additional Features. Here are a few highlights of the Portrait Flow enhancements:
- Flow placeholder frames so that you can setup your portrait pages before you receive your PSPA CD. This is great for ladder planning and for getting a jump start on your portrait pages.
- Automatically reflow a section with just a few clicks; no need to delete the portraits from the pages
- Generate a live preview of your portraits as you tweak the portrait settings
- Adjust the horizontal spacing, vertical spacing and page margins so you can create a portrait section that perfectly suits your book.
- Duplicate portrait settings from one group to another; no need to set mugs up again from section to section
Index Flow Wizard
Creating a yearbook index has never been easier. The Index Flow wizards in eDesign’s Index Builder
automates the process of formatting and flowing the index on your book pages.
- Set the number of columns for your index pages and split or skip columns to allow for additional coverage in the index
- Control all the text formatting with Character Styles
- Flow the formatted index on to pages in a snap, and quickly reflow if changes need to be made
Character Styles "On the Fly"
Those with Adviser or Editor permission can now create new Character Styles “on the fly” within Page Design, Portrait Flow and Index Builder—no need to go to Book Setup. When editing text in Page Design,
simply click the green plus button to the left of the Character Style menu, and the New Character Style dialog box will appear, allowing you to create a new style while you reference the text settings on the page. This will make it even easier for you to create consistent (and automated!) text formatting throughout your book.
Spread History
If you need to retrieve a previously-saved version of a spread, it is no problem with eDesign’s Spread History function. Simply go to the File menu in Page Design and choose View Spread History. Then select the saved version of the spread that you wish to restore and click Open. The older version of the spread will now appear in Page Design. If you want to revert to this version, go the File menu and choose Save as Current Version. If you want to go back to the way it was before, choose Back to Most Recent.
Ability to Undelete An Image
If you delete an image accidentally or simply change your mind about a deleted image, no worries. With eDesign’s Undelete Image function you can retrieve an image for up to seven days after it was deleted. To retrieve a deleted image, go to the “Filter by” menu in your eDesign Library and choose Deleted This Week. You will then see all the recently deleted images. To restore one of the images, click the green plus icon on the upper right of the image which appears when you mouse over the image.
Keywords Panel
Tagging items in the Library is even easier with the new Keywords panel. In the eDesign Library, you will now notice two parts to the tagging panel on the right: Sections and Keywords. Keywords have been given a separate panel that provides a full list of all the keywords in use. The Keywords panel makes it simple to track keyword usage and easy to apply the same keyword consistently to multiple images.
Practice Pages
Practice Pages allow students to begin experimenting with eDesign right away without affecting any pages in the ladder. To access Practice Pages, click the book icon at the top of the ladder or go to the Edit menu and choose Practice Pages. With Practice Pages open, you can experiment with all of the page design functions. If you create something that you would like to preserve for use on actual pages of the yearbook, you can save the design as a template
by going to File > Save As Template. The design will then appear in template section of your Library, and you can apply it to any spread in your book.
Adjustable Page Margins
You now have control over the page margins for your book and the spacing between columns. To change the margin settings from the default, go to Book Setup and open the Preferences pane. You will see controls for the top, bottom, inside and outside margins. These settings will be applied to every spread in the yearbook.
Compound Shapes
You can place images inside all types of closed shapes: rectangles, circles, stars, free-form shapes, etc. But now you are not limited to just one shape! You can take separate shapes and compound them together so that they form one image frame. This creates an array of creative possibilities.
To create a compound shape, draw multiple closed shapes on a page and select them all. Then go to the Object menu and choose Compound Shapes. You can then place an image in the compounded shape. The once-separate shapes now function as one frame.
Ladder Navigation in Page Design
Now you can easily jump from spread to spread in your book without leaving Page Design. The Previous and Next buttons in the upper right of the Page Design window allow you to quickly jump to adjacent spreads. The All Pages button brings up a mini-ladder that allows you to jump to any spread in your book, making your work in eDesign even more efficient.
